Calculating Potential and Kinetic energy
The formula used to calculate potential is P.E = mgh, where m is mass in kilograms, g is acceleration due to gravity , and h is height in meters. The formula used to calculate kinetic energy is K.E = 1/2 m v squared. Kinetic energy is measured in joules. One joule is equal to 1 kg m squared / s squared. The kinetic energy of an object is directly proportional to the square of its speed. To calculate potential energy, you have to make sure a zero height position is arbitrarily assigned.
Potential Energy |
Potential energy is a form of energy that results from an objects position or arrangement of parts. It is stored energy that can become kinetic energy

kinetic energy |
Kinetic energy is a form of energy that results in an objects motion. There are many types of motion that use kinetic energy like translation, rotation and vibration.
